For our February Chapter Meeting, Ken Wills, a member of ETPMI, will speak on Program Management in the field of Systems Engineering.

In 2011, PMI and the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE) formed a strategic alliance to advance the integration of program management and systems engineering. Also, in 2011, The Consortium for Engineering Program Excellence (CEPE) at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), a group of researchers and partners from Industry (predominantly Aerospace), began exploring the application of Lean principles to program management. Many of them were also program managers and/or systems engineers.

This collaboration culminated this past year with the publishing of a book titled “Integrating Program Management and Systems Engineering” (Wiley 2017, Eric Rebentisch, Editor in Chief). From its introduction, “The book makes the case for achieving significant program and project improvements through the strategic integration of program manager and systems engineers.”

Along the way, several papers have been written and a webinar presented, which are available for viewing on the PMI website. The purpose of this talk is to raise awareness of this PMI and INCOSE collaboration among PMI members, to introduce the discipline of systems engineering in this context and to provide an overview of how project managers can benefit through the use of formal systems engineering on complex technical projects.

Mr. Wills currently works for GEM Technologies, Inc. in Oak Ridge providing technical, project management and systems engineering expertise to Department of Energy clients. He has a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering, is a registered professional engineer in Tennessee and has been a PMP since 2001.
